Saint Bernards Sophie, Cooper, Ava, and Kona had their 1st Birthday Celebration coming up, and they wanted to do something extra extra special.  A regular Paw-ty Cake would be OK, but a custom cake made especially for these “Saint Siblings” would be even BETTER!  We were contacted a few weeks ago with the idea:  a Barrel Cake, to represent the barrels used by Saint Bernards working as rescue dogs in the Alps. It is said that St. Bernards wore small around their necks filled with brandy to help revive cold and weary travelers.

A Barrel Cake?  Hrm…sounds like a challenge, alright!  We took a few days to research barrels and different barrel cakes and decided to take it on!

We’re so glad we did because we’re extremely happy with the result!  First we took our classic Banana paw-ty cake recipe, and instead of a bone shape, we started with a rectangle pan.  After baking and cooling, we cut out the approximate shape of a barrel. After that, it was icing and smoothing to make sure we got all those lines looking good!

Here’s the Barrel Cake – no words first

After we got the barrel looking the way we wanted it, it was time to cross our fingers and add the words!!  We were especially nervous because once the words were piped on, it would be a lot more difficult to remove than our regular paw-ty cakes…more layers of colors in this cake than we’re used to!

Success!

We did it!  Phew!  That’s one more custom cake we’re proud to have accomplished but even more satisfying…another successful doggie paw-ty and happy customers:

No waiting for Cooper! He chowed down the personalized bone with his name on it right away!

Happy 1st Birthday, Sophie, Cooper, Ava, and Kona!!  We hope it was a wonderful day full of family, fun and NOMS!
